I find it strange that today, if I am an IT executive, Technical Program Manager, PM, or Dev Manager, I am increasingly likely to face a familiar scenario; projects that once took months are now expected to be completed in weeks, “just deploy AI and results will follow”, even under aggressive deadlines.

This expectation creates an uneasy tension. I am not opposed to adoption of AI; in fact, I strongly support its use where it is applied wisely and safely. What concerns me is a growing tendency toward reckless implementation, where speed is prioritized over understanding, and automation over sound engineering judgment.

Several performance and reliability risks come to mind when speed is pursued without discipline. Systems rushed into production often carry hidden inefficiencies, scalability limits, and long-term maintenance burdens. Experience has shown me that faster is not always smarter, especially in complex technical environments where unintended consequences compound quickly.

With this perspective, I spent time reflecting and researching this shift. What follows is a synthesis of those thoughts.

Yet this obsession with velocity often creates an illusion of efficiency, a scenario where increased speed produces lower-quality outcomes, higher technical debt, and, paradoxically, reduced human productivity.

As of 2026, AI is frequently compared to a “new steam engine,” accelerating output across domains. While it promises time savings, it often leads to an “efficiency trap,” where reclaimed time is not invested in deeper thinking, instead its consumed by more meetings, more tasks, and more noise.

In many cases, “efficiency” simply means accelerating flawed workflows instead of fixing them. Automation layered on top of dysfunction does not create value; it amplifies waste.

However, this often results in a flood of mediocre output, what some call a “workslop.” Burden shifts from creation to verification, forcing humans to spend more time reviewing and correcting than if work had been done thoughtfully from start.

Engineering teams can become overly focused on speed-based metrics, such as output per day, while losing sight of actual objectives, i.e. usability, reliability, and user satisfaction.

Data Paradox
Innovation is outpacing input quality. To sustain high-speed AI systems, organizations increasingly rely on inferred, recycled, or low-quality data, leading to faster decisions built on weaker foundations.

Hidden Costs of “Too Fast”

Prioritizing speed over quality introduces long-term liabilities that are often invisible at first.

Technical Debt and Fragility
Rushed software development leads to brittle systems, inadequate QA testing, and increased Information security exposure. A system optimized purely for speed behaves like a race car, fast, but vulnerable to even minor disruption.

Cognitive Overload and Burnout
Faster tools do not increase human capacity. Constant flow of notifications, AI outputs, and rapid decision cycles overwhelms cognitive limits, resulting in burnout and diminished real productivity.

Loss of Nuance and Strategy
Complex problems require deliberate, analytical thinking. Over-reliance on fast outputs encourages shallow solutions, where speed replaces depth and strategy is sacrificed for immediacy.

In systems where failure carries high cost, information security, infrastructure, financial platforms, quality must take precedence over rapid delivery.

Technology should act as a lever for human capability, not as a mechanism that accelerates burnout. Organizations that succeed in this era will not be those that move fastest, but those that pause long enough to ensure direction is correct before accelerating.
